Job Introduction
BBC Monitoring (BBCM) provides news and information based on our monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 100 languages and across all platforms. It is a centre of expertise and an important part of the BBC’s newsgathering operation with journalists based in the UK and international bureaux. Our extensive operation enables us to provide insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news. Our round-the-clock reporting of TV, radio, press, news agencies, digital and social media is also provided to commercial clients, partners, and the UK Government.
Main Responsibilities
As part of a desk-based editorial team, you will produce a wide variety of content for BBCM’s output on South Asia. You’ll produce distinctive content in English in a range of formats, based on monitoring of TV, radio, newspapers, websites, and digital and social media from South Asia.
You’ll need to provide expertise in BBCM’s published output on one or more of the following areas:
- South Asian media environments, especially broadcast, digital and social media
- Disinformation, misinformation and propaganda in South Asia
- Extremist groups and their activities in South Asia
- Cybersecurity issues in the region
You’ll also contribute expertise via inputs to other BBC outlets as required, including on-air appearances for radio and TV (live or recorded), and to BBCM webinars as requested.
Are you the right candidate?
Significant recent experience as a journalist is essential. The successful candidate will have excellent spoken and written English, including strong writing and subbing skills, as well as fluency in one or more South Asian languages. In addition, one or more of the following would be an added advantage for this role:
- Experience of working for a media-watch organisation
- Experience of working with big data, data analytics or data journalism
- A knowledge of verification tools and techniques in a disinformation context
- A knowledge of social media monitoring tools
